Obi’s planned move to ADC seen as strategic signal from South-East

Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, is set to formalise his move to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Enugu, a choice his allies say is meant to send a powerful political message ahead of 2027.

According to Vanguard, Yinusa Tanko, leader of the Obidient Movement, said supporters from across the country have converged on Enugu for the event. He explained that Obi has long been part of a coalition with the ADC and will use the gathering to outline a roadmap for his supporters.

“Enugu is the historical capital of the East. When the region wants to make a statement, it carries weight,” Tanko said, noting that the Obidient Movement is attending in large numbers.

Obi, who recently reaffirmed his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election, insists he is prepared to “fix Nigeria” within a single four-year term.

Another leader of the Obidient Movement said Obi’s move to the ADC was difficult but unavoidable, arguing that the party remains one of the few platforms not “infiltrated” by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). He added that Obi is expected to join the ADC with a coalition of lawmakers and political figures to strengthen the party’s challenge to the APC.

“In politics, you compromise to achieve results,” he said.

An ADC chieftain, meanwhile, welcomed Obi’s interest, promising that the party’s nomination process would remain open and transparent.
