Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State, on Monday, January 19, 2026 officially flagged off the construction of the N59.7 billion Agbor–Uromi Junction Flyover, describing the project as a life-saving and economy-boosting intervention for the state and the nation.
Performing the groundbreaking ceremony in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, the governor said the flyover was conceived to end years of traffic gridlock and recurring accidents at the notorious Agbor/Uromi Junction, which he noted had claimed many lives and destroyed property.
According to Oborevwori, the chaotic intersection of vehicles, motorcycles and pedestrians along the busy federal highway, worsened by traffic management challenges, made a permanent engineering solution unavoidable.
He disclosed that the project had been awarded to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, with a completion period of 14 months.

The flyover, he explained, will feature a 1.3-kilometre bridge along the Uromi–Agbor Highway, dual carriageways with two lanes in each direction, ramps, roundabouts, concrete drainage systems, kerbs and solar-powered streetlights to enhance safety and sustainability.
Accompanied by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, and top government officials, Oborevwori described the corridor as a strategic economic and transportation artery linking the Eastern and Western Niger Delta and serving as a major gateway to Northern Nigeria.
“Anyone travelling from Lagos to the East or from the East to the West must pass through this route. Its importance to the national economy cannot be overstated,” he said.
He added that the flyover, when completed, would ease mobility, reduce travel time, open up economic opportunities and protect the lives of thousands of road users daily. The governor also noted that the project would create jobs across the construction value chain, from engineers and artisans to transporters and food vendors.
Reaffirming his commitment to even and inclusive development, Oborevwori revealed that his administration had set aside N100 billion as a special intervention fund, with N4 billion allocated to each of the 25 local government areas for infrastructure development, alongside other sectoral investments.

He said Ika South was already benefiting from additional projects, including a N15.4 billion contract for 13.3 kilometres of concrete drainage and five kilometres of roads to tackle flooding and erosion, as well as a planned N12 billion, 15-kilometre Okpe–Abavo–Ekuku-Agbor Road.
“We award contracts strictly on merit and competence. Excellence will always attract further patronage,” the governor assured, expressing confidence that the flyover would be delivered on schedule.
Former Governor of Delta State, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, described the Agbor/Uromi Flyover as monumental, commending Oborevwori for sustaining continuity and converting plans into visible development. He said the spread of infrastructure projects across the state reflected people-centred governance.
Okowa also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that ongoing economic reforms, though initially tough, were positioning Nigeria for long-term sustainability.
Earlier, Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, praised Oborevwori as audacious and tireless, urging the Ika people to continue supporting the administration.
Speaking for Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Mr. Frederich Weiser thanked the state government for the confidence reposed in the firm, pledging timely delivery of the project to the highest standards, drawing from its experience on projects such as the Ughelli Flyover.
Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Chiedu Ebie, assured of the commission’s readiness to collaborate with the state government to complete the Abraka–Obiaruku–Abavo–Agbor Road, describing it as a vital feeder to the new flyover.
Chairman of Ika South Local Government, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, hailed the project as a “project of destiny” and thanked the governor for action-driven leadership, including restoring electricity to communities after more than 14 years in darkness.
Other dignitaries, including Hon. Victor Nwokolo, Mr. Felix Morka, the Dein of Agbor, HRM Benjamin Ikechukwu Keagborekuzi I, and Prof. Onyemaechi Ugboh, commended the governor’s aggressive infrastructure drive and pledged continued support.
