Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on Friday, February 29, 2026 commissioned a wide range of academic infrastructure at the University of Delta (UNIDEL), Owa-Alero Campus, in Ika North-East Local Government Area, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education across Delta State.
Projects inaugurated include the Faculty of Management and Social Sciences Complex, named after the governor; the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building, the Faculty of Engineering Lecture Hall and Workshops, a 500-seater central auditorium, and a fully equipped central library.
Speaking at the ceremony, Oborevwori described the commissioning as a “harvest of projects,” saying it reflected his administration’s resolve to provide world-class learning facilities in state-owned institutions. He noted that beyond visible infrastructure such as roads, bridges and flyovers, his government has made substantial investments in education and health.
“Education remains the most powerful tool for transformation. When we invest in infrastructure, we invest in people. These facilities are designed to meet global standards and to foster innovation, research, entrepreneurship and practical skills development,” the governor said.
He urged students to make responsible use of the facilities and guard against vandalism, stressing that discipline, creativity and integrity must guide their academic pursuits. According to him, the goal is to prepare graduates not only to seek jobs but to create them in a rapidly evolving, knowledge-driven world.
Oborevwori recalled his role in the establishment of UNIDEL and two other state universities during his tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, explaining that the move was necessitated by limited admission quotas approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) for Delta State University, Abraka.
“At a time, over 25,000 students were qualified for admission, but only about 5,000 slots were approved. We had to act. Today, we can see that the vision is worthwhile,” he said, while commending the immediate past administration and the NUC for facilitating the approvals.
Former Governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa, praised Oborevwori for sustaining and strengthening the state’s higher education system, noting that UNIDEL alone now has about 15,000 students.
Commissioner for Higher Education,Nyerbovwo Tonikari, said the Sheriff Oborevwori Complex, completed in 2025, houses a 250-seater auditorium, lecture rooms, offices, a student resource centre and media facilities. He added that the Faculty of Environmental Sciences building and the engineering complex were equipped with auditoriums, classrooms, studios, libraries and fully fitted workshops.
Vice-Chancellor of UNIDEL, Stella Chiemeke, described the projects as a testament to the governor’s transformational agenda, saying they would significantly expand the university’s capacity to train professionals critical to the state’s socio-economic development.
Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Council, Monday Odigwe, also commended the governor, noting that the projects reflect the practical implementation of the MORE Agenda across the state.
