
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) to stamp out age cheating in the National Youth Games (NYG), warning that ceremony of the 9th NYG in Asaba, the Delta governor described the weeklong event as a “festival of unity, discipline, and excellence,” but lamented the growing trend of states parading over-aged athletes.
“The Games must remain a true nursery of young talents,” Oborevwori said, tasking the NSC to introduce stricter measures ahead of future editions.

While hailing the courage of all competitors, the governor commended Team Delta’s consistency and assured that the state is fully prepared to host the 10th edition in 2026.
NSC Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, represented by Chief Amaka Asiofu, praised the Asaba Games for producing fresh talent to replace Nigeria’s ageing stars, while promising deeper investment in grassroots sports and a sustainable sports economy.

The Asaba spectacle ended with a historic twist as Lagos State emerged overall champions for the first time, finishing with 110 medals—52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze. Hosts Delta came second with 114 medals (37 gold, 38 silver, 39 bronze), while Edo settled for third on 79 medals.
In total, 33 states hit the medals chart, with 802 medals shared: 246 gold, 236 silver, and 320 bronze.
