Residents of the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) have been told to keep Asaba, the state capital and environs clean, green and secure.
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori made the call Thursday, Move 30, 2023 while flagging off the “Keep Asaba Secure, Clean and Green” roadshow.
The roadshow flagged off a three-week sensitization programme on “Clean, Secure and Green Delta”, in which Governor Oborevwori charged residents of the Capital Territory to maintain a clean environment at all times.
At the flag off ceremony that held at the side fence walls of the legislative quarters, Okpanam Road, Asaba, he emphasized that residents must desist from indiscriminate dumping of refuse on median kerbs and in drainage channels or risk arrest and prosecution.
Oborevwori, who was represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, advised residents of the state to always comply with the stipulated rules and regulations on the protection of the environment, insisting that environmental laws should be obeyed to guarantee a clean and healthy environment.
He noted that the relevant authorities had taken steps to guard against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, citing the Private Sector Participants (PSP) initiative designed to ensure a seamless evacuation of waste from residential apartments, offices, business places, among others, stressing that if residents fully complied with the requirements the entire state would be clean.
The Governor commended the Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency for the sensitization programme and urged residents of Asaba and the environs to plant trees in and around their premises to mitigate the effects of climate change and create green spaces for their healthy living.
In his remarks on the occasion, the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Ejiro Jamani, said his Ministry was fully in support of the State Capital Territory Development Agency on the Clean, Secure and Green Delta campaign, as it was for the good of the state.
He called on Deltans, and not just residents of the State Capital Territory, to key into the programme so that the set objectives could be achieved.
The Director General, Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency, Chief Patrick Ukah, said the sensitization programme was aimed at notifying residents of Asaba and the environs that it would not be business as usual with respect to habits inimical to the environment.
Chief Ukah warned that illegal or indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drains and on median kerbs, over grown weeds, illegal structures built on natural water ways or defacing the environment, open defecation, urinating in unauthorized places and indiscriminate parking of vehicles on the roads, would no longer be condoned within the State Capital Territory and urged residents to be guided to avoid running foul of the law.
He announced that Sanitary Inspectors of the old were back in the State Capital Territory and would be visiting homes, offices and business premises to enforce compliance with environmental laws, pointing out that at the end of the 21-day programme, anyone found wanting would face the wrath of the law.
In their goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Oshimili North Local Government, Hon Innocent Esewezie and his Oshimili South counterpart, Dr Kevin Ezenyili, commended the State Capital Territory Development Agency for the sensitization campaign and pledged support for the initiative in view of the numerous benefits of a clean and healthy environment.
The highlight of the event was a road show which took the board, management and staff of the agency, as well as volunteers from the Legislators’ Quarters axis to Traffic Light roundabout and back.
