Oborevwori hands over land to FMBN for workers’ housing, waives ₦200m charges

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday, September 9, 2025 formally presented a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) for the construction of a workers’ housing estate in Ibusa, Oshimili North Local Government Area.

The 10.1-hectare land, located at Core Area 2, Ibusa, is to be developed under a tripartite collaboration involving FMBN, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Speaking during the presentation at Government House, Asaba, Oborevwori said the initiative reflects his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, noting that statutory fees amounting to about ₦200 million were waived to ease the process.

“Many of our junior and middle-level workers spend a large part of their salaries on rent. This scheme is vital to give them relief, and I urge the Federal Mortgage Bank to ensure timely delivery for the benefit of those it is meant for,” he said.

The governor also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for encouraging federal agencies to partner with states, pledging Delta’s full support for the project.

Earlier, FMBN’s Executive Director for Loans and Mortgage Services, Dr. Mohammed Sani Abdul, commended Oborevwori’s infrastructural drive, urging local governments in Delta to contribute to the National Housing Fund to spread such projects to grassroots areas.

Abdul noted that FMBN, established over three decades ago, is tackling the country’s estimated 20–22 million housing deficit through mortgages and construction loans. He revealed that the bank is currently handling nine projects nationwide and is determined to replicate similar efforts in Delta.

“With the Renewed Hope Mega Mini-City project of Mr. President, our goal is to provide affordable housing for Nigerians at all levels, especially those at the bottom of the pyramid. Delta is strategic to this plan, and we are determined to make a lasting impact here,” he said.
