Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has expressed profound grief over the death of prominent industrialist, business leader and philanthropist, Chief (Dr.) Emmanuel “Nuel” Ojei, who died at the age of 74.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the Governor described Ojei’s passing as a major loss to Delta State and the nation. He hailed the late entrepreneur as a visionary figure whose investments, innovations and generosity helped shape lives and businesses across Nigeria.
Oborevwori noted that Chief Ojei’s commitment to enterprise and public good stood him out as a true Deltan, adding that his contributions to job creation, economic growth and philanthropy will remain part of his enduring legacy.
He recalled that Ojei built one of Nigeria’s formidable indigenous business empires with interests spanning automotive, construction, petroleum and other sectors.
Founder of Nuel Ojei Holdings (NOH) and Nuel Auto Distributors (NAD), Ojei began his career at Rutam Motors in 1973 before establishing companies that later became major players in the automobile and allied industries. By 1981, Nuel Auto Distributors had become the sole agent for Mazda vehicles in Nigeria and subsequently partnered with Mercedes-Benz for authorised vehicle servicing.
Through NOH, he expanded into banking, construction and other sectors, creating employment opportunities for hundreds of Nigerians. In recognition of his achievements, Delta State University conferred on him an honorary Doctorate in Business Administration in 2003.
Governor Oborevwori also praised Ojei’s humanitarian spirit, noting that the Nuel Ojei Foundation supported education, healthcare and social welfare initiatives that touched many lives.
He extended condolences to the Ojei family, the Issele-Uku community and the wider business community, praying God to grant them the strength to bear the loss and to grant the departed eternal rest.
