Oborevwori Salutes Navy’s Crucial Role in Protecting Nigeria’s Maritime and Oil Assets

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has applauded the Nigerian Navy for its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation’s maritime space and securing vital oil and gas infrastructure, roles he described as central to Nigeria’s economic stability and national security.

The Governor gave the commendation in Asaba on Monday, November 24, 2025 while receiving the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, who was in the state on an operational tour of naval formations under his command.

Welcoming the Naval Chief and his delegation, Governor Oborevwori said their visit underscored the Navy’s dedication to strengthening security across the Niger Delta, especially in Delta State, one of the country’s biggest oil-producing states.

“Your visit reflects your commitment and love for our state,” the Governor said. “Delta is a major contributor to Nigeria’s economy, and the Nigerian Navy remains instrumental in protecting our maritime environment and defending our national assets.”

Oborevwori commended the Navy for its anti-piracy operations, support for peace and stability in the region, and its strong collaboration with other security agencies. He praised officers serving in Delta for their professionalism and synergy, noting that the unity among security formations had helped sustain peace across the state.

“I take security very seriously in Delta State. All security agencies here work together, which is why we enjoy peace. Without peace, development cannot thrive. Our major contractors—Julius Berger, CCECC and others, operate here because of the stable environment,” he added.

The Governor noted that the relative calm in the state had enabled his administration to pursue large-scale infrastructure projects, including flyovers and major highways such as the Ughelli–Asaba expressway, one of the longest in the South-South.

Reaffirming the state’s commitment to enhanced maritime and coastal security, he assured the CNS of continued government cooperation in protecting oil installations and riverine communities.

“Our oil assets are secure because of the strong cooperation among security agencies. When there is a problem in Delta, the whole nation feels it. We are safeguarding the home front, and we appreciate the Navy’s commitment,” he said.

Earlier, Vice Admiral Abbas, who assumed office on October 30, said he was in Delta to assess the operational readiness of naval units, identify challenges, and strengthen strategies for securing critical oil and gas infrastructure.

He noted that Delta remained familiar territory to him, having served previously in the Central Naval Command.

“Delta State hosts a significant portion of Nigeria’s oil and gas infrastructure, and its protection is vital. I am here to see what we are doing well, what requires adjustment, and what challenges exist,” Abbas stated.

He thanked the Governor for the state government’s continued support to the Navy, noting that improved security on Delta’s waterways had contributed positively to national oil production.

“I visited our base and observed new developments that were not there during my last posting. Thank you for that support. We look forward to even stronger collaboration to ensure smooth operations,” he said.

The visit ended with renewed assurances from both the state government and the Navy to deepen cooperation for the safety of Delta State, the wider Niger Delta, and Nigeria’s economic lifelines.
