PAGG Condemns Attack on Obi, Oyegun, Others at ADC Secretariat in Benin, urges Edo Governor to act

A pro-democracy group, the People’s Alliance for Good Governance (PAGG), has condemned the attack on Mr. peter Obi, Chief John Odigie-Oyetunde, Professor Osunbor and other members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) at the party’s secretariat in Benin City.

In a statement issued by its National Chairman, Amb. Desmond Tochukwu Egba, PAGG expressed concern that recent comments attributed to Governor Monday Okpebholo, particularly an alleged directive advising Obi to refrain from visiting Edo State, may have “inadvertently created an environment conducive to the unfortunate events that transpired.”

While acknowledging the governor’s constitutional role as Chief Security Officer of the state, the group urged him to take “immediate and decisive action” to prevent further escalation and restore calm.

PAGG stressed that the safety and security of all citizens and visitors remain a fundamental responsibility of the state government, calling on the Edo State Government to ensure adequate measures to protect lives and property and to uphold citizens’ constitutional rights to free movement and access.

The group said many of its members have expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing the need for peaceful coexistence and respect for human rights. It called for a thorough investigation into the attack with a view to identifying and prosecuting those responsible.

“The people of Edo State deserve an environment of peace, security, and respect for human rights,” the statement said, adding that PAGG expects the governor to treat the concerns raised with the seriousness they deserve and act accordingly.
