PERSPECTIVE – Gov Oborevwori was never their underdog

By Olomu Onyiye.

No other contestant was unjustifiably more underrated by his major opponents than Gov Sheriff Oborevwori was.

Prior to the Guber election of 2023, some chieftains of Delta’s major opposition Parties fixated themselves on castigating Gov Oborevwori rather than advance their manifestos. But today, they’re chagrined that in spite of their characteristic denunciations, the Governor continues to garner awards and accolades across the nation.

Besides the glaring fact above, it’s also clear that the opposition is desperately latching on criticism of the Governor as a way of reinventing their depreciated political careers. But the real truth is: most principal chieftains of the opposition in the State are now lonely and unsure of their political trajectories especially as 2027 draws ominously closer for them.

For instance, barely two years after the stint of one of them as a national figure, he has suddenly become some sort of an hermit in the Delta APC-a Party he so factionalized and ruled in his heydays, like the fiefdom of an emperor.

Founding fathers and stalwart of the Party were brashly alienated in the scheme of things while the lackeys he installed as the ‘leadership’, ran roughshod with the deployment of federal might.

But with benefit of hindsight, would one actually blame then State Exco of APC? Were they merely not an assemblage of ‘Errand Boys’ vicariously holding positions on the whims and pleasure of the maverick power broker?

As it stands today, these folks have become pariahs in their various intractable factions. The centre no longer holds for them; yet they prefer to just carry on so haughtily in the face of the absence of any clear-cut leadership which pitiably portends them so as some ‘sheep without any shepherds’.

Sadly too, the APC in the State has unwittingly handed over their Media handles to blackmailers whose stock-in-trade is their penchant for mischief; one also woven around the elements of uncouthness, irresponsibility, hubris and extortionism that they’ve deployed over the years. One is therefore right to quiz why it is actually not the PRO of the State APC that speaks for the Party hierarchies rather than such hirelings that suffocate the cyberspace with their inanities?

By way of suggestion, Delta’s opposition figures should rather concentrate on uniting and repairing their fractious camps than take recourse to these imperiled attempts of using the Governor to ‘catch cruise’ or reassert themselves in the political turf- a mission which is both herculean and diversionary.

Maybe they need to be told that Deltans hardly consider the self-opinionated views they bandy around as critical and helpful in the assessment of their beloved Governor whom they preferred and chose over their candidates.

Of course, beloved Deltans actually can see through the veneers of hypocrisy, grandstanding, envy, narrow-mindedness and selfishness that usually run through most of their criticisms and opinions on the state of affairs in the State.
