PERSPECTIVE – In defence of Gov. Sim Fubara

By Ike Okonta

Last week a Lagos-based newspaper published an editorial stating that since Nyesom Nwike had facilitated the emergence of Siminalayi Fubara as governor of Rivers State in 2023, the latter owed Wike a favour and should do what Wike wanted and decline to be re-elected in 2027.

This is arrant nonsense. Yes, Wike helped Fubara in emerging as PDP governorship candidate. But the moment Fubara won the election, he became the bona fide leader of Rivers State and is free to take political decisions based on the strategic interests of the people.

And the overwhelming majority of the people of Rivers State are calling on Sim Fubara to present himself for a second term. To refuse their request is to do violence to democracy which properly understood is THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE.

It is significant that members of the Rivers State House of Assembly are now divided over the matter of the impeachment of Governor Fubara. A divided house is useless, and the people of Rivers State should not continue to look to it for political direction.

Indeed, I call upon the people of Rivers State to remain steadfast in their support for Governor Fubara’s second term in office. Justice is on their side. Democracy is on their side. History is on their side.
