Rising insecurity: Obi blasts FG, says Nigeria now ‘ a disgraced nation’

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has condemned the federal government’s handling of Nigeria’s worsening security crisis, accusing it of undermining democracy while the country bleeds from relentless terror attacks.

Reacting to recent tragedies — including attacks in Kwara and Kebbi states and the killing of a Brigadier General and other officers by ISWAP fighters in Borno — Obi said the government’s priorities have become “shamefully misplaced” at a time when unity and decisive action are urgently needed.

In a post on his X handle, Obi said Nigeria now fits the description of a “now disgraced nation,” a phrase recently used by U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Within a single week, 25 people were kidnapped, and one of our generals, along with other officers, was killed,” he wrote. “Today, we witness another troubling terror attack in Kwara State. Rather than uniting in this critical moment, we are consumed by internal wrangling, party squabbles, and distractions.”

Obi accused the government of actively destabilising opposition parties rather than fostering national cohesion. He cited ongoing crises in the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and other political platforms, alleging they were “deliberately orchestrated by a government that should be embracing everyone so we can unite in this troubling period.”

He contrasted the current situation with a lesson from the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, recalling how the former leader had directed then-INEC Chairman, Prof. Maurice Iwu, to protect the stability of all political parties for the sake of democracy.

“What we witness today is the opposite,” Obi said. “The current government seems more intent on weakening parties than strengthening our democracy — seeking to fragment the PDP, Labour Party, SDP, and others.”

He warned that democracy cannot thrive where opposition is stifled, elections lack credibility, and governance excludes broad participation.

A New Nigeria is possible, he insisted.

The statement was signed by Ibrahim Umar, spokesman for the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), on November 20, 2025
