Residents of Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State have expressed worry over the continuous rise in the price of cooking gas, otherwise known as Liquefied Petroleum Gas.
Newsmen who monitored the situation in the ancient town, report that many homes have shifted to other alternatives such as sawdust, firewood and charcoal as the price of cooking gas continues to rise.
A resident, Mr. Jacob Iyama, said: “It has been difficult to keep up with the steady increase in the price of cooking gas and this has caused my family to make use of charcoal for cooking for the time being, because spending so much on just cooking gas is not sustainable. I urge the Federal Government to come up with a policy to ensure that the price of cooking gas becomes affordable to all.”
Another resident, Racheal Jatto, who spoke in a similar vein said: “Cost of goods just keeps going up; even to cook basic meals is becoming a luxury. The price hike is not just a pinch, it’s a punch to many of us who rely on cooking gas for our daily cooking needs.”
“Previously, cooking gas was N1,000 per KG, presently it’s N1,300 per KG, how do they want us to afford it when we are still receiving the same salary? I want the government to remedy the hardship families are going through; we’re suffering, we are battling with the high cost of food items; and we are also battling with the means to cook them. This is nothing but double tragedy; the government needs to help the masses,” she pleaded.
