Tinubu Sacks Inspector-General of Police Egbetokun, Appoints AIG Disu As Replacement
President asks IGP to step down during meeting at Presidential Villa
Abuja, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has relieved Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun of his duties and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as his replacement, multiple Presidency sources have confirmed to Premium Times.
Egbetokun was asked to step down during a meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, according to a source familiar with the development.
Although no official announcement had been issued as of the time of this report, sources at both the Presidency and Force Headquarters indicated that preparations are underway for a formal handover ceremony. An official statement is expected later on Tuesday.
Calls to presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga and Force Public Relations Officer Ben Hundeyin were unsuccessful.
Egbetokun, who turned 61 this year, was appointed as Nigeria’s 22nd Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, with his confirmation by the Nigeria Police Council taking effect on October 31, 2023.
The former IGP was initially scheduled to retire on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60. However, an amendment to the Police Act by the National Assembly allowed him to serve a full four-year term regardless of age, with the Presidency maintaining he remained in office legally under the amended Police Act 2024. He marked 35 years in service on March 3, 2025.
His tenure as police chief was characterized by several controversies, including allegations of human rights abuses.
His successor, AIG Tunji Disu, is expected to assume office following the formal handover ceremony.
