SWAN honours award for Fred Edoreh, for service to Sports Journalism

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has named Fred Edoreh, former Chairman of its Lagos State Chapter and current Senior Special Assistant on Media to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, among recipients of Special Recognition Awards as part of the association’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

In a letter signed by the National Secretary, Ikenna Okonkwo, SWAN said the honour acknowledges Edoreh’s “outstanding contributions, professionalism, and enduring service to the growth and integrity of sports journalism in Nigeria.”

“Over the years, your commitment, mentorship, and passion have inspired generations of journalists and enriched the nation’s sporting narrative,” the statement read.

“This recognition is a token of appreciation for your sacrifices and legacy in promoting excellence, fairness, and credibility in sports reporting.”

A respected figure in Nigeria’s sports media landscape, Edoreh is credited with introducing several innovations during his time in SWAN leadership — serving twice as Secretary and twice as Chairman of the Lagos Chapter.

Among his lasting achievements are:

  • Completing and equipping the Lagos SWAN Secretariat;
  • Strengthening the association’s marketing and revenue base;
  • Championing the Lagos SWAN City Estate project;
  • Establishing partnerships with public and private institutions; and
  • Launching professional training programmes for members at the Nigerian Institute of Journalism and the Lagos Business School.

He is also widely admired for building unity and camaraderie among members through sustained engagement and team-building initiatives.

The Diamond Jubilee Award ceremony is scheduled for October 31 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, where SWAN will celebrate six decades of promoting integrity, professionalism, and excellence in Nigerian sports journalism.
