President Boka Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun , and approved the appointment of Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting Inspector-General of Police with immediate effect.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Egbetokun submitted his resignation citing pressing family considerations. Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and commended his dedication, professionalism, and commitment to strengthening the country’s internal security architecture.
Egbetokun, who was appointed in June 2023, was serving a four-year term expected to end in June 2027 in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
Against the backdrop of prevailing security challenges, the President approved Disu’s appointment in acting capacity, noting that his experience, operational depth, and leadership credentials would provide steady direction for the police during a critical period.
The statement added that, in compliance with the Police Act 2020, the President will convene a meeting of the Nogeria Police Council to consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police, after which his name will be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
President Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to enhancing national security, strengthening institutional capacity, and ensuring a professional and accountable police force capable of fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities.
