Troops foil Borno bomb plot, seize explosives; North West operations net 189 rifles

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) have averted a potential terror attack in Borno State, capturing a suspected suicide bomber and seizing critical bomb-making components in a major security breakthrough.

The operation unfolded on Monday in Banki town, Bama Local Government Area, where personnel of the 152 Task Force Battalion, working with other agencies, apprehended Abubakar Mustapha, a native of Bama.

A statement from the Joint Task Force North-East Media Information Officer, Lt. Col. Sani Uba, revealed that Mustapha was caught with primed Improvised Explosive Device (IED) materials, signaling he was in the final stages of preparing an attack.

“Preliminary investigations revealed the suspect was in possession of additional incriminating materials linked to terrorist activities. He is undergoing detailed interrogation to uncover his sponsors, collaborators, and network links,” Uba stated.

Related Interception at Border
In a connected success, troops stationed at the Cameroon-Nigeria border intercepted a Peugeot vehicle carrying six bags of urea fertilizer—a key ingredient for IEDs. Follow-up operations led to the arrest of the dealer and the recovery of six more bags, bringing the total seizure to twelve. The vehicle and materials are now in military custody.

“All suspects and recovered items are currently in custody for further investigation and necessary legal action,” Uba added.

The military reaffirmed its commitment to securing the region, stating that OPHK troops “continue to dominate their areas through aggressive patrols and intelligence-led operations to deny terrorists freedom of action.”

Substantial Gains in Northwest Simultaneously
Separately, the Nigerian Army reported significant achievements in the Northwest under Operation Fasanyama. The 8 Division, Sector 2, disclosed the recovery of 189 AK-47 rifles, thousands of ammunition rounds, and other assets, alongside the rescue of 1,023 kidnapped victims across Sokoto, Katsina, Kebbi, and Zamfara States.

The General Officer Commanding the 8 Division, speaking at the 2025 Combined West African Social Activities (WASA) in Sokoto, said operations had neutralized several bandit leaders, destroyed camps, and led to a notable decline in attacks.

“These operations have restored community confidence and boosted economic activities, as farmers and traders now access previously unsafe areas,” he stated.

The Division also enhanced its strike capability with new specialized units and prioritized troop welfare through upgraded medical facilities, additional health staff, and renovated accommodations.

“The Nigerian Army remains committed to consolidating gains and transforming into a professional, combat-ready force,” the GOC emphasized.

The WASA event, a tradition since 1901 fostering unity among West African soldiers, was attended by the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, a representative of the Sokoto State Governor, and other dignitaries.
