Warri brewing ethnic tension: DOPF urges dialogue, inclusivity on International Peace Day

As the world marks International Day of Peace today, September 21, the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has raised concern over growing tension among ethnic nationalities in Warri, particularly in Warri South Local Government Area, urging stakeholders to act decisively to safeguard harmony.

In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Oghenekparobo Ehvwubare, FIMC, ANIPR, DOPF reminded citizens that the 2025 Peace Day theme, “Act Now for a Peaceful World,” underscores the urgency of dialogue, inclusivity, and collective responsibility in building sustainable peace.

The Forum warned that any escalation of the tension in Warri—widely regarded as the commercial heartbeat of Delta State—would carry dire socio-economic implications for the state and the region.

“Delta State is already grappling with the challenges of insecurity. To allow ethnic disputes to fester in Warri is to risk economic decline and deepen social fractures,” the statement cautioned.

DOPF therefore called on the Delta State Government, security agencies, and traditional institutions to rise to the challenge by creating platforms for constructive dialogue and conflict resolution. It also appealed to youths and community leaders to embrace restraint and tolerance, noting that while conflict leaves scars that may take decades to heal, peace fosters unity, prosperity, and development.

“Warri has long been the economic and social heartbeat of Delta State. Allowing ethnic tensions to escalate in such a vital hub is unacceptable. The path to lasting peace lies in dialogue, inclusivity, and mutual understanding. As we observe this year’s International Day of Peace, we are reminded to ‘act now for a peaceful world’—choosing conversation over conflict, tolerance over division, and unity over discord,” the Forum emphasized.

The statement concluded with a call for proactive engagement by all stakeholders to ensure that peace remains the foundation for Delta State’s growth and coexistence.
