A new twist emerged Thursday when a Rivers State High Court struck out a suit filed by the resigned factional Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie.
Counsel to Ehie Edison, Barr. Marc-Barango, informed the court of the decision of Ehie to withdraw the suit, follows his resignation as Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly and member representing Ahoada East Constituency II.
The Counsels to Amaehwule, the 24 lawmakers and the Assembly did not oppose the application to withdraw the suit and the presiding judge, Justice F. A. Fiberesima, subseqently struck out the suit.
Ehie had filed the charges against 25 Rivers Assembly lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), in the wake of the political crisis between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
He filed the suit against the defected lawmakers over their continued sitting as members of Rivers State House of Assembly after their seats have been declared vacant.
Recall that a Federal High Court Sitting in Port Harcourt, presided over by Justice M.W. Danagogo had, in December, confirmed Edison Ehie as the authentic Speaker of the state’s House of Assembly. The ruling, also ordered Martins Amaewhule and Dumle Maol to stop parading themselves as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
This development, which conforms with the 8-points peace resolution pact brokered in Abuja by President Bola Tinubu, may however not affect the fate of some other alleged court cases filed against the defection the 27 lawmakers.
