EFCC investigation: The truth will come, says Okowa as Delta North PDP leaders pay solidarity visit

Solidarity support came for the former governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa when People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leaders of Delta North Senatorial District visited him on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 in his Asaba residence.

Led by the Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, the delegation expressed strong support for f Dr. Okowa, as he faces an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation.

The delegation, led by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeame, included members of the Delta State House of Assembly, local government chairmen, commissioners, former Deputy Governor Benjamin Elue, ex-minority leader in the House of Representatives Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, PDP chairmen, and other party leaders. The group passed a vote of confidence on Senator Okowa and current Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, acknowledging their leadership and achievements.

Speaking, Sir Onyeame praised Dr Okowa’s legacy, particularly his contributions to development in Delta State.

He said: “Your Excellency, we stand by you as our leader and father. During your tenure, Delta State experienced remarkable development, particularly in Asaba, where flooding has drastically reduced, and the civil service structure is among the best in Nigeria. We are here to tell you that we will go with you anywhere, anytime.”

Hon. Ndudi Elumelu echoed similar sentiments, highlighting Okowa’s contributions to infrastructure, youth empowerment, and social development.

He said: “From being a council chairman to governor, your journey has been remarkable. Your administration’s focus on roads, human capital development, and supporting widows and the less privileged set a high standard. Despite challenges, you attracted World Bank support, further enhancing development in Delta State.”

Hon. Charles Emetulu, emphasized Okowa’s accessibility and effectiveness as a leader, reinforcing the collective confidence of the Delta North delegation.

In response, Senator Okowa expressed gratitude for the visit, describing it as uplifting amidst the ongoing challenges. He reassured the delegation of his transparency and readiness to cooperate with the EFCC investigation.

He stated: “I am not afraid of any investigation or media trial. While I may not claim sainthood, I can confidently say that my administration acted in the best interest of Delta State within the limits of available resources. The allegations against me are exaggerated, and I trust the truth will prevail.”

Okowa addressed specific allegations, including claims that he misappropriated N1.3 trillion, owned properties in Liberty Estate and Abuja, and had stakes in Premium Trust Bank. He dismissed these as baseless and politically motivated, urging accusers to provide evidence to support their claims.

“It’s unfortunate that these allegations come from within our state. These accusations are designed for media trials, but they lack substance. My administration managed N2.6 trillion over eight years, and all expenditures were accounted for, including salaries, pensions, and loan repayments,” Okowa added.

Okowa also acknowledged support from various groups, including the Urhobo Progressive Union (UPU), Traditional Rulers Council, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN). He noted that their visits reinforced his confidence in navigating this challenging period.

The EFCC investigation, which stems from a petition filed last year, has sparked debates and political tension. Allegations against Okowa have ranged from N1.3 trillion to revised figures of N500 billion and N40 billion, further fueling controversy. Despite this, Okowa remains resolute, stating:
“I have nothing to hide and will fully cooperate with the EFCC. Let the investigations proceed; I trust that the truth will eventually come to light.”

As the investigation unfolds, Okowa’s supporters have pledged their unwavering backing, emphasizing his track record of good governance and leadership in Delta State.
