EDITORIAL – Delta State Senators, House of Reps members: A call to work to activate Delta Ports

It has become necessary to call the attention of legislators representing Delta State across the three Senatorial Districts as well as the members in the House of Representatives who are also elected agents of the people across the federal constituencies of the state in the Green Chambers, to the urgent need for them to come together as a team and work in synergy towards activating the three Delta ports.

Banneronlinenews Editors view with concern that our representatives seem not to appreciate the importance of getting these three ports to come alive again like they were in the 1970s. Rather, the impression that people have of them, despite the propaganda emanating from them, is that they are busy dissipating energies on frivolities and exposing themselves as political envoys of the people who are making sounds and fury without substance to show for their representation.

Let’s imagine for a moment that the Delta Ports are in good stead and fully operational, they will trigger humongous bubbling of activities that will make the state lively again like it was in those halcyon years. Truly, the job of working to activate the ports should be the engagement of all the three senators and 10 members of the House of Representatives because persons from all the local governments, senatorial districts and federal and state constituencies benefit from the busy  activities that the ports generate.

It is to us a disappointment that our legislators do not see value and therefore the necessity to engage their colleagues and the state government for support for motion that will put pressure on the Federal Government to initiate fool proof policy that will get these Delta Ports to work again. We expect them to work hard enough to ensure that their engagement culminates in the passing of appropriation bills that will be recommended as a law to get the federal government to see to it that funds are appropriated to speedily get work to commence towards activating these ports.

It is recalled that a major consideration that got the administration of former governor Emmanauel Uduaghan to begin the expansion and construction of the Asaba – Warri express road dualization was to take care of the huge traffic that the activation of the Delta Ports would bring about as it will encourage traders and importers from the South East to enjoy the value of getting their goods to Delta Ports, which is closer to them than transporting them from Lagos.

Benefits that will accrue to Delta State in activating the Ports again cannot be over emphasized. Experts attest to such benefits. Hear them: “Activating the Delta Ports of Warri, Burutu, and Koko will generate significant economic and social benefits, including increased trade, job creation, and improved infrastructure. These ports, strategically located in the Niger Delta, have the potential to become major trade hubs, boosting Nigeria’s economy and benefiting the host communities”.

For us at banneronlinenews, the foregoing is a major challenge that our federal legislators, working in synergy with the state government, must be proud to engage in and achieve breakthroughs. The benefits to the state and her people are worth the efforts.
