The United States Mission in Nigeria has restated its firm stance against corruption, warning that any Nigerian found guilty of corrupt practices will be denied entry into the United States — regardless of their wealth, status, or influence.
The Mission issued the warning on Monday, September 22, 2025 via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, underscoring Washington’s zero-tolerance approach to graft.
“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the statement read.
The renewed warning highlights America’s ongoing commitment to global anti-corruption efforts and comes against the backdrop of stricter immigration and enforcement policies under President Donald Trump’s administration.
In recent years, the US has imposed a series of visa restrictions on Nigerians. In 2020, Washington announced visa limitations that affected only immigrant visa applications, while business, student, tourism, and official visas remained unaffected.
Similarly, in May 2023, the US government announced visa bans targeting individuals involved in undermining Nigeria’s general elections.
The anti-corruption and immigration clampdown is part of a broader policy agenda that has also seen the Trump administration pursue large-scale deportations of undocumented immigrants.
According to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), about 3,690 Nigerians could face deportation as part of these enforcement actions.
