U.S. actions of hope to Nigeria’s threatened communities, Lawmaker says

Recent U.S. military strikes in Nigeria may lead to further action against Islamic State-linked militants, according to U.S. Representative Riley Moore. The Christmas Day operations, coordinated with the Nigerian government, struck militant camps in the northwest.

“President Trump is not trying to bring war to Nigeria, he’s bringing peace and security,” Moore said in a televised interview, arguing the strikes aimed to protect vulnerable communities and preempt holiday-season attacks.

U.S. Africa Command stated the goal was to degrade the capabilities of extremists attacking civilians and security forces. Nigerian officials, providing the intelligence for the strikes, labeled the groups a national security threat for their campaign of killings and kidnappings.

Moore, a longtime advocate for international attention on violence against Nigerian Christians, suggested future actions would depend on conditions and continued coordination with Abuja. Nigerian authorities maintain their counter-terrorism efforts are impartial and focused on restoring security for all citizens.
