2026 Remembrance Day: Oborevwori leads wreath-laying as Delta honours fallen heroes in Asaba

Activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day in Delta State on Thursday, January 14, 2026 climaxed with a solemn and dignified ceremony at the Cenotaph in Asaba, where wreaths were laid at the ceremonial tomb of the unknown soldier in honour of Nigeria’s fallen heroes.

The event was attended by the Delta State Governor and Special Guest of Honour, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor; Chief Judge of the State, Justice Tessy Diai; Service Commanders of the Armed Forces; and the Commissioner of Police in the state.

Also present were the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Kingsley Emu; Chairman of the Delta State Council of Traditional Rulers and Orodje of Okpe, His Royal Majesty, Maj-Gen. Felix Mujakperuo (Rtd.); members of the Nigerian Legion, top government officials and other stakeholders.

On arrival, Governor Oborevwori was accorded full military honours, including a traditional salute, after which he inspected a guard of honour mounted by officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Nigerian Legion, a display that reflected discipline, honour and national unity.

A minute of silence was observed in memory of fallen heroes, followed by interfaith prayers led by Christian and Muslim clerics for the repose of their souls, the wellbeing of their families, the welfare of veterans and divine guidance for the nation’s leadership.

Thereafter, Governor Oborevwori led Service Commanders, the Commissioner of Police, representatives of traditional rulers, legionnaires and top government functionaries in the symbolic laying of wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

The ceremony reached its emotional peak with the firing of volleys and the release of white pigeons by the Governor, symbolising peace, hope and renewal, while reaffirming Delta State’s commitment to the ideals of sacrifice, unity and patriotism for which the nation’s heroes fought and paid the supreme price.

Armed Forces Remembrance Day remains a solemn national observance, serving as a poignant reminder of the cost of freedom and the collective responsibility of all Nigerians to sustain peace, unity and national cohesion for future generations.

It will be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, launched the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Appeal Fund in honour of fallen heroes, wounded veterans and serving personnel on the frontlines of national security.
