MILESTONE- Doris Ochei extols hubby’s 37 years in uniform, a lifetime of honour

Major General Raymond N. Ochei (rtd) has bowed out of the Nigerian Army after 37 years of distinguished service, drawing glowing tributes for a career defined by discipline, humility and quiet excellence.

At his pulling-out ceremony, his wife, Dr. Doris Amaka Ochei, described the moment as one of deep gratitude and pride, reflecting on nearly four decades of unwavering commitment to duty and country.

She praised the retired general for serving “with dignity, honour and humility,” noting that his conduct, both in and out of uniform, earned him respect across ranks and among civilians.

“For nearly four decades he led with maturity, lived with integrity and wore the uniform with exemplary conduct that never wavered,” she said.

Dr. Ochei said that her husband retired without blemish or controversy, distinguished by compassion and discipline. According to her, he never wielded power to intimidate, choosing instead to uplift others through kindness and sacrifice.

The tribute also laid bare the personal cost of military life. Recounting their 26 years of marriage, she spoke of long separations, loneliness and silent sacrifices, describing him as “the best father and husband anyone could hope for.”

“As an officer’s wife, I have known the cost of duty, long seasons of loneliness and burdens borne in silence so that he could answer the call to serve,” she said.

Expressing thanksgiving that he completed his career safely and honourably, Dr. Ochei said she felt blessed to see him “pulled out in dignity” at the height of an illustrious journey.

She also used the occasion to salute military families and fallen heroes, calling for greater recognition of the spouses, children, widows and widowers whose sacrifices often remain unseen.

“My heart goes out to the families of our fallen heroes and heroines. We honour your loss and stand with you in grief and gratitude,” she added.

Describing her husband as “a real gem, a hero, a star, an achiever and a mentor,” she prayed that retirement would usher in peace, renewal and continued impact through his enduring legacy of service.

Major General Ochei’s exit from active service closes a remarkable chapter of leadership and devotion, as family, colleagues and well-wishers celebrate a military career widely regarded as honourable, disciplined and exemplary.
