Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to resign over what he described as “monumental failure in governance,” arguing that the administration has failed to deliver on key promises and has presided over worsening economic hardship, insecurity and declining public welfare.
Obi made the call in a post on his X handle on Monday, where he drew parallels between the resignation of the British Prime Minister and the state of governance in Nigeria.
According to him, the British leader’s decision to step down followed mounting public dissatisfaction over economic stagnation, a worsening cost-of-living crisis and unfulfilled campaign promises, adding that political leaders must be held accountable for their performance in office.
The former Anambra State governor recalled that before assuming office in 2015, President Tinubu had repeatedly criticized former President Goodluck Jonathan over insecurity and economic challenges, including demanding Jonathan’s resignation following the abduction of schoolgirls in Chibok.
Obi noted that during the 2023 presidential campaign, Tinubu pledged to improve electricity supply, tackle corruption and enhance the welfare of Nigerians, while also challenging voters not to support him for a second term if he failed to deliver on those promises.
However, Obi argued that conditions across the country have deteriorated significantly since Tinubu assumed office.
“At present, however, these conditions have worsened. Electricity supply remains unreliable, insecurity has intensified in many areas, including kidnappings, and economic hardship has deepened rather than eased,” Obi said.
He further claimed that key sectors including security, infrastructure, transportation and anti-corruption efforts had suffered setbacks under the current administration. “We are in the worst possible condition,” he declared.
The NDC presidential flag bearer said he was joining “Nigerians of goodwill” in demanding the President’s resignation, insisting that such a move would help establish a culture of accountability in public office.
According to Obi, resignation in the face of poor performance would demonstrate that leadership is a sacred trust rather than an entitlement and would send a clear signal that failure in public office carries consequences.
He argued that ending what he termed a culture of impunity was essential to building a better future for Nigeria and achieving the vision of a “New Nigeria.”
