ASABA, Nigeria – Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Thursday marked the 35th anniversary of the state’s creation with a powerful call for collective responsibility, praising successive administrations and the people of Delta for their enduring contributions to peace, stability, and development.
Speaking at a thanksgiving service held at the Government House Chapel in Asaba, the governor framed the milestone as both a moment of celebration and a sober reflection on the state’s journey since its inception.
“It has been 35 years of a remarkable journey, and by God’s grace, we will continue to play our part to ensure that the achievements of our state are sustained and improved upon,” Oborevwori said, attributing the state’s progress over the decades to divine grace and the resilience of its citizens.
The governor paid homage to the state’s political leaders, past and present, including former military administrators and civilian governors, acknowledging that each administration had written a distinct chapter in Delta’s history. “Their wisdom, sacrifices, dialogue, and commitment have helped the state maintain peace and achieve progress,” he noted. “Each administration has contributed a chapter to the history of our state, and we will not forget them.”
Oborevwori emphasized that Delta’s diversity, spanning ethnic nationalities, religious communities, and non-indigenes, remains one of its greatest strengths and a critical pillar of its continued harmony. He stressed that his administration has a duty to build on the foundations laid by its predecessors, insisting that “gratitude for the past must be accompanied by responsibility for the future.”
Looking ahead, the governor outlined a vision for a Delta State that is “more peaceful, prosperous, secure, inclusive and competitive, and better prepared for the opportunities of the future.” He identified infrastructure, education, healthcare, human capital development, agriculture, and technology as priority areas, while also committing to strengthening institutions, fostering a business-friendly environment, and empowering young people to realize their potential.
He particularly lauded Deltans for sustaining the peace, describing it as the primary driver behind the development witnessed across the state. “The peace we are enjoying today has brought development. If there were crises in the state, I don’t think we would be talking about the level of development we are witnessing today,” he said. “I know that by the time we turn 40, Delta will still look better.”
The anniversary service featured a sermon by Ven. Charles Osemenam, Chaplain of the Government House Chapel, who urged the people to deepen their relationship with God and place unwavering trust in Him. He described the 35th anniversary as a time for thanksgiving and sober reflection, calling on Deltans to acknowledge God’s role in the state’s journey and continue seeking His guidance.
The event was attended by the wife of the Governor, Deaconess Tobore Oborevwori; the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme; and other senior government officials.
