Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of veteran journalist and Delta State Correspondent of News Direct, Comrade Dave Okpogadie, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the journalism profession and the state.
Okpogadie died on Saturday after a courageous battle with jaw cancer, an illness he fought for more than two years.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori extended his heartfelt sympathies to the family of the deceased, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, the News Direct family, and the entire media community.
The governor described the late Okpogadie as a consummate professional whose dedication, integrity and unwavering commitment to the journalism profession earned him the admiration and respect of colleagues, public officials and members of the society.
According to the governor, Okpogadie distinguished himself through balanced and responsible reportage, leaving behind a legacy of professionalism that would continue to inspire journalists across the state and beyond.
Governor Oborevwori also paid tribute to the late journalist’s courage and resilience during his prolonged illness, noting that his steadfast faith and determination in the face of adversity served as an inspiration to many who followed his difficult journey.
He said the death of Okpogadie had created a painful vacuum in the media community, adding that his contributions to the growth of journalism in Delta State would not be forgotten.
The governor prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed journalist and asked God to grant his family, friends, colleagues, members of the NUJ Delta State Council and all those he left behind the strength and fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
