The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, on Wednesday charged political parties, candidates and their supporters to shun violence, bitterness and division as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Guwor gave the charge in his opening address as the Delta State House of Assembly resumed plenary after its 2026 annual recess.
Welcoming members back to the chamber, the Speaker expressed gratitude to God for preserving members and their families during the recess, saying he was delighted to see lawmakers return in good health and ready to resume legislative duties.
The resumption coincided with celebrations marking the 35th anniversary of the creation of Delta State, with Guwor joining millions of Deltans at home and abroad to commemorate the milestone.
On behalf of the Assembly, the Speaker congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the state government and the people of Delta on the anniversary.
Guwor also highlighted the successful hosting of the Delta State Economic and Investment Summit during the Assembly’s recess, describing it as an important economic milestone for the state.
According to him, the summit provided a platform for showcasing Delta’s enormous investment opportunities and connecting the state with both domestic and international investors.
He commended Governor Oborevwori and his administration for what he described as a strategic initiative, assuring that the Assembly would continue to provide the necessary legislative backing to create an enabling environment for investment, enterprise and economic development.
“The House will continue to provide the legislative support necessary to create an enabling environment for investment, enterprise, and economic development,” Guwor said.
The Speaker also described the expansion of representation in the Delta State House of Assembly ahead of the 2027 elections as a historic development.
He noted that the number of state constituencies had increased from 29 to 38, creating nine additional constituencies across the state.
According to him, the development would strengthen democracy by giving more communities direct representation and a stronger voice in the legislative and democratic processes.
“Representation is at the heart of democracy. The restoration and creation of additional constituencies provide an opportunity for more communities to have a direct voice in this institution and in the democratic process,” he stated.
Turning to the 2027 general elections, Guwor noted that campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections commenced on August 19, 2026, while campaigns for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are expected to begin on September 9, 2026.
He appealed to politicians and their supporters to ensure that the electioneering period does not degenerate into violence and hostility.
“Let our campaigns be about ideas, programmes, competence, character and service. Election is not a do-or-die affair,” the Speaker declared.
Guwor urged political parties, candidates, supporters and the general public to embrace peaceful and issue-based campaigns.
The Speaker also charged members of the Assembly to approach the remaining legislative calendar with renewed commitment and vigour.
He urged lawmakers to translate the knowledge and insights gained during their leadership training at the London Business School into practical improvements in their legislative responsibilities.
Guwor specifically called on chairmen and members of committees to give urgent attention to pending bills, motions and petitions.
“As we resume plenary today, there is much work before us,” he said, urging members to attend to outstanding legislative matters with dispatch.
He again welcomed his colleagues back from the annual recess and called for renewed dedication to the service of Delta State and its people.
