ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has forcefully denied reports that it is in talks with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) or any other political party ahead of an impending court judgment, describing the claims as “not true” and “preemptive and speculative.”
In a press release issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to its current coalition leadership and vowed to fight what it called the “illegal action” taken against the party by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and agents of the ruling party.
“The coalition leadership is not having any such conversation with any political party at the moment,” Abdullahi stated. “We are fully committed to ensuring that the illegal action taken against our leadership by INEC and other agents of the ruling party is upturned. We believe that this is the only path to safeguarding the rule of law and ensuring that multiparty democracy survives in Nigeria.”
The ADC acknowledged that it remains open to expanding the opposition coalition to “bring all opposition elements in the country together to rescue our country.” However, the party insisted that any suggestion it is considering abandoning the ADC is false and should be ignored.
In unusually sharp language, Abdullahi accused state institutions of being weaponized against the opposition, saying: “Notwithstanding the flagrant bastardisation of democratic institutions, the ADC leadership remains confident that the judicial institutions will, at this defining moment, resist the pressure to be complicit in undermining Nigeria’s democracy.”
The party gave no indication of when the expected court judgment would be delivered but made clear that legal victory remains its primary focus.
“We will not abdicate that responsibility,” Abdullahi added.
