Baba kekere, Lateef Jakande dies at 91

Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande, the first civilian Governor of Lagos State, is dead. He was aged 91.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who announced the demise of the elder statesman stated:”With gratitude to God for a worthy life well spent in the service of Lagos State, Nigeria and humanity, I announce the death of a venerable statesman, outstanding politician, public administrator and the first Civilian Governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Kayode Jakande.”

Born on July 23, 1929, Jakande, fondly called Baba kekere, in reference to being a disciple and protégé of the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the veteran journalist, notable Awoist, and an uncommon politician served as governor of Lagos in the Second Republic from 1979 to1983 on the platform on the defunct UPN. He also served as Minister of Works in the military regime of Late Gen. Sani Abacha.

He will be remembered for his doggedness in pursuing people oriented projects that made great impact in the life of the people of Lagos state in his tenure as governor.
