CUPP spokesperson’s arrest tyrannical, mocks democracy, says Atiku, call for his immediate release

Barrister Ikenga Chinyere.

Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has called for the immediate release of the spokesman of the Coalition of United Political parties (CUPP), Barrister Ikenga Ugochinyere, describing his arrest a mockery of the rule of law and human rights.

A statement by Paul Ibe, Media Adviser to Atiku Abubakar averred that the arrest is tyrannical and inimical to a constitutional order, and demanded for Ugochinyere’s immediate and unconditional release.

The statement reads in part: “The arrest of Ugochinyere, despite a substituting court order, makes mockery of rule of law, a necessary ingredient of a democracy. It is unacceptable to us and many Nigerians who value democracy and human rights.

“Such action of the government at this time when our country is going through much stress and uncertainty, with citizen protests in some parts of the country, is not in anyone’s interest.

“Nigeria, despite all its shortcomings, remains and still looks forward to being referred to as a democracy. A democracy respects human rights and the rule of law rather than impunity and brigandage.”
