Legislators of the Delta State House of Assembly have increased the N298.078bn budget presented by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to the Assembly by N10.73bn bringing the total budget for 2018 for the state to N308.9bn.
Passing the bill into an appropriation law on Thursday, November 30, 2017, as an expression of their determination to pass the bill, the Assembly suspended the House Rules which made the Assembly to seat beyond 1p.m. up till 5p.m. when the budget bill was eventually passed into law.
Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Tim Owhefere in moving the motion for the appropriation bill to be passed into law, moved that the House resolve itself into a Committee of Supply, and when it did, the Committee considered clause by clause the appropriation Bill with the annexures and sector by sector.
Presenting report on the 2018 Budget, Acting Chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi stated that the 2018 budget was prepared with the current and prevailing International Public Sector Accounting (IPSA) specification and standard. Nwaobi also noted that the preparation of the budget took into consideration important micro economic framework among which are: national inflation, oil production benchmark, USD exchange rate, etc, and finally the budget was tied to well defined and specific projects which the State government intends to execute.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori thereafter thanked his colleagues for working assiduously towards the passage of the appropriation bill and for again putting the State at the fore front of being the first State in the country to pass its budget in record time.
