LAGOS, Nigeria – Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has extended his congratulations to 16-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson after the teenager clinched Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in fencing at the Commonwealth Championships, held in Lagos.

Esiovwa-Thompson, a native of Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area, made history by winning the men’s Under-23 epee event, delivering a commanding performance that stunned the continent and broke new ground for Nigerian fencing.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori lauded the young athlete’s “remarkable achievement,” stating that the victory had brought immense honour and pride to both Delta State and the nation.

“This is a testament to the potential of young Deltans when provided with the right environment and opportunities to excel,” the Governor said, praising Esiovwa-Thompson’s exceptional talent, determination, and composure—particularly his ability to overcome more experienced opponents on his path to glory.

Competing for Nigeria for the first time after switching allegiance from England, the teenager produced a dominant run. He went unbeaten in Pool 4 to secure a bye into the round of 16, then dispatched South Africa’s Mathobela 15-7. He continued his rampage with a crushing 15-2 victory over an Indian opponent in the quarter-final and edged India’s Ashwini Shaurya 15-11 in a tense semi-final.

The historic final saw Esiovwa-Thompson face Asian champion Lokesh Verma of India. In a stunning display of skill, the Nigerian teenager routed the veteran 15-5 to claim the crown, while India’s Godwin Natarajan and Ashwini Shaurya settled for bronze medals.

Governor Oborevwori extended his gratitude to the fencer’s family and coaches for their contributions to his development, urging Esiovwa-Thompson to remain focused and strive for even greater accomplishments on the international stage.

He reassured the public that his administration would continue to support youth development and sports excellence, adding that such victories would inspire a new generation of Deltan youths. The Governor concluded by wishing the young champion more victories and greater laurels, calling on him to remain a worthy ambassador of the state and country.
