Delta Govt commended for Water Sanitation and Hygiene bill

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State.

Delta state has been commended for introducing a bill on urban Water Sanitation and Hygiene.
The commendation came today, Tuesday, December 03, 2019 at a media roundtable organized by CODE, a Non Governmental Organisation in partnership with USAID.

At the event that held in the hall of Bellwood Hotel, Okpanam Road, Asaba CODE’s project Lead, Ijeoma Oforka praised the state government for deeming it necessary to want to sanitise the water situation in the urban areas of the state, pointing out that Delta Is the only state that has taken steps to legislate on the matter.

However, the round table however, called on the state government to build public conveniences where people can ease themselves rather than indulging in open defecation.

Participants at the roundtable also called on Deltans to begin to demand from the state government to provide safe drinking water to all urban houses. According to them, the current situation where people sink boreholes and drink from the water is not good for the health of the people, because such water is not treated.

“The water coming from the state water board is a better option of good water supply because it is treated and clean. The state government needs to seriously make treated and good drinking water available to the people through the water board.”

It was observed that water from the boreholes are in most cases built close to toilets, and even graves, thus making it not sanitation compliant with all the attendant health hazards.

While also pointing out that the monthly environmental exercise in the state is cosmetic as the people hardly engage in cleaning up their environment, but just stay back at home and wait for the sanitation period to end, participants urged politicians to stop using water as campaign bait.
