ASABA — The Delta State Government has constituted an eight-member Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Adeda Ekwevugbe, in his workplace.
Ekwevugbe’s death, which occurred under circumstances the government described as unclear, has reportedly generated serious concerns among his colleagues, members of the wider public service and organised labour.
The state government, in a special announcement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, said the Police had already commenced investigation into the incident.
It added that, following consultations with organised labour, government had agreed to establish an administrative panel to further examine the circumstances surrounding the death.
The panel is chaired by the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, Mrs Charity Ehimen.
Other members are the Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Mr Mamuzo Erebe, SAN; Permanent Secretary, Office of the Secretary to the State Government, Mr Lucky Nkemachor; and Executive Assistant to the Governor on Public Service, Sir A.E. Oghoro.
Organised labour is represented by the Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Delta State, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku; Chairman, Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Chief Benson Efeotor; Chairman, Trade Union Congress, Comrade Wilson Asekutu; and Secretary, Joint Negotiating Council, Comrade Dennis Chuks Isichei, who will serve as Secretary to the panel.
The government directed the panel to complete its assignment within two weeks, with a mandate to uncover the circumstances surrounding Ekwevugbe’s death and enable government to address all issues arising from the incident in accordance with the law.
The state government also expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, while assuring civil servants of the safety of their working environment.
Government further reaffirmed its commitment to respecting the dignity and sanctity of human life.
