Delta sets up panel to implement new minimum wage

The Delta State Government has constituted a committee to work with organized labour towards implementing the new minimum wage for the state public service.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Mr Chiedu Ebie, who inaugurated the Committee on behalf of the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, observed that the governor was passionate about the wellbeing of Public Servants in the State.

According to the SSG, the governor had directed that discussion with labour should commence in earnest to fashion out a mutually agreeable scheme based on the new minimum wage for the benefit of Delta State workers.

Apart from the Secretary to the State Government who is the Chairman of the Committee other members included the Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief David Edevbie; the Delta State Head of Service, Mr Reginald Bayoko mni; and Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor, Prof Sylvester Monye.

Others were the Commissioner for Finance, Sir Fidelis Tilije; the Chief Economic Adviser Dr Kingsley Emu; Chairman Civil Service Commission, Dame Nkem Okwuofu; Chairman Local Government Bureau for Pensions, Mr Ben Igo and Permanent Secretary Office of the Secretary to Delta State Government, Mr Jerome Morka mni who is to serve as the Secretary to the Committee.

Meanwhile, the inaugural meeting of committee set up by Delta State Executive Council to examine request by labour unions for payment of interest on accrued pensions liabilities took place on Monday. November 18, 2019 at the office of the Senior Policy Adviser to the Governor.

According to the statement signed by the SSG, the committee was expected, among other things, to examine the merits or otherwise of the request on accrued outstanding pension benefits and advises on the cost implications.
