The Executive of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council has congratulated Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, Governor of Delta State and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on his re-election victory at the just concluded 2019 gubernatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The NUJ said reports from across the state, adjudged the process leading to the re-election of the governor as free, fair and transparent, and therefore credible and thanked God that the outcome was contrary to the fears of the threat to peace, order and security of lives and property.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the Council, Comrade Michael Ikeogwu and Secretary, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, the union stated that the victory of Governor Okowa was a bold endorsement by Deltans of the principle of equity and rotation of the governorship seat among the three senatorial districts in Delta State.
According to the statement, the victory was also an endorsement of continuity of the development strides of the governor owing to the overwhelming votes he got from all the nooks and crannies of Delta State.
The council saluted the patience, tenacity and doggedness exhibited by Senator Okowa all through the electioneering period and thanked God Almighty for crowning his efforts with victory.
The council also congratulated all other political parties and their candidates, particularly the All Progressives Party (APC) and its candidate, Chief Great Ogboru, on the concerted efforts they put in the campaigns, which the council believed, had helped to make for engaging and robust electioneering campaigns in the state.
While the council called on all political parties and their candidates that participated in the gubernatorial election in the state to accept the outcome with gallantry, it equally urged the re-elected governor to be magnanimous in victory by extending hands of fellowship to all stakeholders in the Delta State development project.
The council stated that after the election, governance should follow; saying the governor should endeavour to concentrate on the continuation of development and progress in the state, even as it urged Deltans and politicians to also allow for governance, development and progress after the elections and avoid politicking for the next elections.
The leadership of the union pledged to contribute objectively to facilitate the success of Senator Ifeanyi Okowa administration, adding that it looked forward to an ever robust relationship with the Government of Delta State in deepening democratic tenets and good governance.
The council prayed for God’s continuous guidance, the grace of insight like that of King Solomon on Governor Okowa and the will-power to fully accomplish the content of his administration’s blueprint tagged the ‘SMART Agenda’.
