Okowa’s 2020 Testimony on Ochei’s Leadership Qualities Resurfaces

Former Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, had in 2020 described former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, as “brilliant, vibrant and exceptional,” in a testimony now being cited by the NDC Delta North Senatorial District as evidence of his leadership qualities and capacity for public service.
The testimony was contained in a report published by Vanguard on March 17, 2020, following Ochei’s appointment as Executive Director of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
According to the report, Okowa, who was then governor of Delta State, acknowledged Ochei’s contributions to the development of infrastructure at the State House of Assembly complex, his cordial relationship with fellow lawmakers and his wealth of experience in public service.
The statement has been brought back into public discourse by the Office of Hon. Aaron Udoka Ebenuwa, NDC Delta North Senatorial District Chairman, as the 2027 political contest and calls for a “new direction” in Delta North gather momentum.
In a statement issued in Asaba on Saturday, the office said the former governor’s assessment constituted a historical record of the recognition Ochei received for his leadership, experience and service.
The statement, titled “Okowa Testified About Victor Ochei’s Character, Competence and Capacity,” said the former governor’s description of Ochei as “brilliant, vibrant and exceptional” remained relevant to current discussions about leadership in Delta North and the wider Anioma area.
It said Ochei’s legislative experience, leadership record and years of public service were among the factors that should inform public discussion about his capacity for greater responsibility.
“At a time when Delta North and the Anioma people are looking toward a new direction, the public record surrounding Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, ONYE-AWOLOR-ZIOZI, deserves attention,” the statement said.
The NDC Delta North Senatorial District added that Okowa’s historical comments about Ochei’s character, competence and capacity were “worthy of consideration” as the people of the district deliberate on their political future.
