The Orodje of Okpe, His Royal Majesty, Major General Felix Mujakperuo (rtd) has decried the evil of cultism in the society, describing the disturbing situation as a big problem in the country.
The respected monarch expressed the concern when he played host to members of the Indigenous Correspondents’ Chapel (ICC) one of the chapels of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council who visited him in his palace at Orerokpe last Thursday, August 31st, 2017.
He said: “Cultism is a big problem, not only in the state but in the country. There are judges who are cultists; there are military officers, etc. So it is a social problem, which you the media have to fight.
“Cultism is destroying the society. Those engaged in it go from smoking Indian hemp, to stealing their mother’s money, and then go into big crimes. It is this problem that you as media men.”
The Orodje also expressed concern about the social media, describing some of the engagements as evil because they indulge in the disinformation. “This is the hate speech we are talking about ,” Major General Mujakperuo said.
Urging journalists to always cross-check information before publishing, he counseled against the publication of sensational stories.
Earlier in his speech to the Orodje, Chairman of the ICC, Comrade Bartholomew Ozah said ICC is an umbrella body for all practicing and qualified journalists who report for community media, consisting of newspapers, magazines radio and notable on-line media in Delta state, pointing out that the visit was part of periodically interface with critical stakeholders in the state as part of the journalists’ core responsibility of disseminating objective information and educating the public.
He congratulated the Orodje for successful celebration of his 10 years reign on the ancient throne of his ancestors, observing that his reign has not only brought peace and development to the kingdom but has also ushered in good fortunes to Okpe sons and daughters especially, those in politics and governance.
Ozah said: “It will also be recalled that under your reign, two illustrious sons of Okpe Kingdom became the Speaker, Delta state House of Assembly and so many others in political positions too numerous to mention. Omogu, that means you are indeed a blessing to the kingdom
“The Indigenous correspondents are proud of you, Your Royal Majesty on how you have been fostering the spirit f love, mutual understanding and brotherhood amongst the Okpe people and encouraging them on the need to live together as one family and have cordial relationship with their neighbours.
“ Your Royal Majesty, now that the Okpe Union headquarters is here at the ancestral home of the Okpes, Okpe museum and library should be open for academic researches for Okpe scholars and lovers of education because the okpe has a rich cultural history. We believe that when Okpe culture and history are taught in all schools in Okpe land, it will go a long way in revamping the rich cultural heritage of the people.
“In the same vein, the youths are future of tomorrow, and there is much need to continually engage them (Okpe youiths) in the history and traditions of the kingdom to enable transmit the knowledge acquired to the next generation,” Comrade Ozah said.
