POLITICS – From lecture halls to political trenches: How Economist Godwin Ossai became NDC’s secret weapon for Delta 2027

By Chukwudi Abiandu

The quiet, studious city of Asaba may have just found a new political protagonist. In a move that has sent ripples through the Delta State political landscape, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled a technocrat with a pedigree that reads like a blueprint for governance.

Mr. Godwin O. Ossai is not your typical politician. He is a man whose life story transitions seamlessly from the rigorous halls of the University of Ibadan to the high-stakes boardrooms of international banking, and now, to the unpredictable terrain of Delta State politics.

His emergence as the NDC’s deputy governorship candidate for the 2027 election is being described by party faithful as the “missing puzzle piece”, a blend of intellectual firepower and grassroots grit.

The Ndokwa Boy Who Conquered the Boardroom

For those who knew him back in Utagba-Uno, Ndokwa West Local Government Area, Ossai was always the boy with his head in the books. That early discipline paid off. After St. Kizito’s Grammar School, he headed to the prestigious University of Ibadan, earning degrees in Economics that would launch a remarkable career.

But Ossai didn’t just stay in the ivory tower. In the early 1980s, as a pioneer lecturer at Bendel State University (now Ambrose Alli University), he was molding minds. Today, those students are bank MDs, senators, and industry captains. Even at Novena University, where he served as Head of Economics and Ag Dean, his influence was felt.

Yet, the allure of the corporate world was strong. Ossai traded the chalkboard for the boardroom, joining Coopers & Lybrand (now PwC). He later became a heavy hitter in the banking sector, serving as General Manager and Regional Director at Standard Trust Bank and later Access Bank Plc. He is also an alumnus of the prestigious IMD in Switzerland, a badge of global business excellence.

A New Dimension for NDC

Why does this matter for Delta politics? For the NDC, Ossai represents more than just a running mate; he represents a strategy.

In a political era where voters are increasingly tired of career politicians, Ossai’s profile as a management consultant, entrepreneur, and founder of First Business Academy offers a fresh narrative. His expertise in economic forecasting and operations research is expected to inject a dose of pragmatism into the NDC’s policy playbook.

His roots in Delta North are equally strategic. Hailing from the Ndokwa Nation, his candidacy could unlock the political mathematics of the district, potentially galvanizing voters in Ndokwa West, Ndokwa East, and Ukwuani.

The Man Beyond the Suit

But who is Godwin Ossai when the tie comes off? Despite his intimidating resume, insiders describe him as a man of simple pleasures. He is a family man who resides in Asaba, with a deep passion for Christian evangelism and philosophy. He enjoys music, drama, and football, a reminder that behind the strategist is a human being who enjoys the rhythms of everyday life.

The Road Ahead

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the NDC has clearly signaled its intention to fight a battle of ideas and competence. The challenge for Ossai and his principal will be to translate his impressive credentials into tangible votes.

Can a technocrat win the hearts of the grassroots? That is the question the NDC hopes Godwin Ossai will answer. If his track record is anything to go by, he is a man who knows how to turn forecasts into reality. Delta State will be watching closely.
