POS extension scandal rocks Delta Police: CP orders trial of officers caught collecting cash inside station

The Delta State Police Command has moved swiftly to contain a growing scandal after a viral video exposed officers extorting money from a motorist using a Point of Sale (POS) machine inside a police station in Asaba.

In a strongly worded statement issued on April 16, 2026, the Command described the incident, allegedly involving officers of ‘C’ Division, Asaba, as “embarrassing, unprofessional, and completely unacceptable,” vowing that those responsible will face the full weight of disciplinary action.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, has ordered the immediate orderly room trial of the implicated officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, over the shocking incident which reportedly occurred on January 13, 2026.

The Command did not mince words, condemning the conduct as “inexcusable and unpardonable,” stressing that no Nigerian should be subjected to such degrading treatment by law enforcement officers.

Reinforcing a zero-tolerance stance, the CP aligned with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun (represented in the release as IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu), which expressly bans extortion and the use of POS machines or any electronic payment systems within police facilities.

He reiterated that no officer has the authority to demand or receive money from members of the public under any guise, warning that abuse of office will not be tolerated under his leadership.

“The outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public,” the Command assured, signaling a rare commitment to transparency in handling police misconduct.

The CP further charged officers across the Command to uphold professionalism, respect citizens’ fundamental human rights, and operate strictly within the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

In what appears to be a response to mounting public outrage, the Command commended citizens who brought the incident to light and urged continued reporting of police misconduct through its Complaint Response Unit.

Police spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to discipline, accountability, and rebuilding public trust, values many Nigerians say have long been undermined by recurring cases of extortion and abuse within the force.

The unfolding trial is expected to test the sincerity of the Command’s zero-impunity posture in a system often criticized for shielding errant officers from consequences.
