‘The greatest match awaits you in Nigeria’, Peter Obi tells youths as European season kicks off

As millions of Nigerian youths tune in to watch European football this weekend, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has a message: channel that passion into the 2027 election and build a Nigeria where talent can thrive at home.

As the 2026/2027 European football season gets underway, the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has launched a campaign appeal to Nigerian youths — urging them to turn their love for the beautiful game into a demand for good governance .

In a post on his X handle titled “Beyond Football: The Match for a Better Nigeria,” the former Anambra State Governor acknowledged that millions of young Nigerians will spend the weekend “glued to television screens, streaming matches, debating tactics, celebrating victories, and admiring the organisation, discipline, and excellence that make European football the envy of the world” .

“But here is a question worth asking: Why can’t Nigerian football be just as good?” he wrote .

Talent Is Not the Problem

Obi argued that Nigeria’s football struggles are not due to a lack of talent, pointing out that Nigerian players excel in Europe because they operate in systems “that reward merit, invest in infrastructure, ensure security, and are governed with competence and accountability” .

“Great football does not exist in isolation. It grows where there is good governance,” he stated .

According to the NDC flagbearer, stadiums, academies, transport systems, healthcare, security, and electricity, the very pillars that support football in Europe are products of leadership that makes the right choices and citizens who demand accountability .

“Nigeria has the talent. What we have lacked is leadership that creates an enabling environment for that talent to flourish,” he said .

‘Start With Your Vote’

Obi announced plans to spend the next 150 days engaging Nigerian youths “wherever they gather — in town halls, campuses, online spaces, and even football communities” .

His core message: “The future you admire in Europe can be built in Nigeria. But it starts with your vote” .

He painted a vision of a transformed Nigeria where the local league is competitive, stadiums are full every weekend, clubs attract sponsorship, coaches receive proper training, and young footballers no longer see emigration as their only path to success .

“Nigeria will not emerge through wishful thinking. It will emerge when young Nigerians decide that elections matter as much as football matches,” Obi declared .

The 2027 ‘Match’

The presidential hopeful described the January 16, 2027 election as more than a political contest — calling it an opportunity for youths to choose “a nation that exports talent because it is respected, not because its citizens are escaping failed governance” .

He encouraged football fans to continue cheering for Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, Inter Milan, AC Milan, or any club they support .

“But when the final whistle blows, remember that the greatest match awaiting Nigerian youths is not in Europe. It is in Nigeria,” Obi stressed .

He described it as “the match for good governance”, for jobs, security, education, sports development, and national renewal .

“Unlike football, where only twenty-two players are on the pitch, every Nigerian youth has a place in this match. Stand up. Mobilise. Vote. Defend your vote,” he urged .

“If Nigerian youths can passionately follow European football every weekend, they can also passionately build a Nigeria where our own football,  and our nation becomes a source of pride,” he added .

A Weekly Reminder

Obi promised to return every weekend with a reminder of the January 16, 2027 election and the country’s future.

“We can create world-class standards right here at home. It’s in your hands, and that new Nigeria is POSSIBLE,” he concluded .
