EU Envoy hails Delta’s investment potential, pledges support for waterway modernization

ASABA — The European Union is exploring major infrastructure investments in Delta State, including port modernization and waterway development along the Abidjan-Lagos corridor, Ambassador Gautier Mignot revealed during his first official visit to the state.

Speaking at a courtesy meeting with Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme, Ambassador Mignot emphasized that the EU remains Nigeria’s leading trade and investment partner. He noted that future collaboration would be guided by the Global Gateway Investment Strategy, mobilizing grants, loans, and development finance from institutions such as the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

“We are exploring opportunities to extend development along the Abidjan-Lagos corridor, including waterway transportation and port modernization along Nigeria’s coastline and the Niger River, reaching up to Kogi State and passing through Delta State,” Ambassador Mignot said. He added that discussions are underway with partners including the Port of Antwerp and NEXIM Bank, with the potential to evolve into a future Global Gateway project.

The Ambassador also reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting young Nigerians through education and digital development initiatives, as well as internship programs for recent graduates.

While acknowledging previous EU-supported efforts such as the now-concluded Niger Delta Support Programme, Ambassador Mignot said, “Looking ahead, we believe there is significant potential to do more, especially in infrastructure and connectivity.”

In response, the Deputy Governor outlined Delta’s investment advantages, including over 160 kilometers of coastline, vast solid mineral deposits (silica and coal), extensive waterways for blue economy development, and fertile land for large-scale agriculture. He also invited partnerships in healthcare, erosion control, and youth development.

“Delta State is a prime investment destination, one of the best in Nigeria. It is not only resource rich but also safe and secure,” Onyeme assured, extending a personal invitation to the Ambassador to return with his team for a guided tour of the state’s opportunities.
