AGBOR — Former Delta State governorship aspirant Sir Tony Obuh’s political legacy received a major boost on Friday, May 29, 2026 as his wife, Mrs. Ogor Tony-Obuh, secured a landslide victory in the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) House of Assembly primary election, emerging as the party’s candidate for the 2027 general elections.
The primary election, held at the NDC secretariat in Agbor, triggered celebrations across the metropolis as party faithful and supporters hailed Mrs. Tony-Obuh’s overwhelming triumph.
In a keenly contested exercise described by observers as transparent and credible, Mrs. Tony-Obuh polled an impressive 287 votes to defeat her closest challenger, Mr. Oriehi Destiny, who garnered 101 votes. Other contestants, Mr. Eugene Orewa and Mr. Kennedy Oyeason, secured 40 and 32 votes respectively.
Her commanding victory has positioned her as a formidable contender ahead of the 2027 Delta State House of Assembly election.
Addressing supporters shortly after being declared winner, Mrs. Tony-Obuh expressed gratitude to party members for the confidence reposed in her, pledging to work tirelessly to strengthen the NDC and deliver effective representation for her constituency.
She said the outcome of the primary reflected a collective commitment to progress and expressed optimism that the support demonstrated during the exercise would translate into victory at the general election.
“The massive support from our party members today is a testament to our shared vision for progress,” she said. “I am deeply confident that this incredible momentum will be replicated when we head to the polls for the main election, and I am officially elected to the Delta State House of Assembly in 2027.”
Reacting to the outcome, prominent NDC stakeholder, Mr. Paul Etumudor, described Mrs. Tony-Obuh as the party’s strongest candidate for the race, citing her administrative competence, grassroots appeal and reputation for compassionate leadership.
He expressed confidence that her emergence would strengthen the party’s electoral prospects in the constituency.
Meanwhile, independent observers who monitored the exercise commended the peaceful conduct of the primary, noting that the process was orderly and devoid of the rancour and disputes often associated with local party contests.
The result is expected to be formally ratified and published by the NDC National Working Committee in the coming days.
