The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has restored four previously suppressed State House of Assembly constituencies following court judgments, paving the way for fresh party primaries and elections.

In a press release dated August 14, 2026, the electoral body announced the reinstatement of Abraka, Isoko North II, and Ughelli South II State Constituencies in Delta State, as well as Yagba West II State Constituency in Kogi State

According to Mohammed Kudu Haruna, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, the restoration was carried out pursuant to court orders directing the commission to reinstate the constituencies .

Fresh Primaries and Election Schedule

Political parties seeking to field candidates in the affected constituencies are required to conduct fresh primaries between August 21 and 25, 2026 . This timeline coincides with scheduled primaries for bye-elections in Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency, Disina and Sakwa State Constituencies in Bauchi State, Udu State Constituency in Delta State, and Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State .

INEC has fixed September 19, 2026, for elections into all affected constituencies, including the restored ones . The commission clarified that all other timelines and activities contained in its revised Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the 2027 General Election would apply to the restored constituencies .

Political Implications

The restoration of three constituencies in Delta State is expected to have significant political implications as parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. The affected constituencies cut across three politically significant areas of the state .

INEC directed political parties to submit notices of their primaries to the commission before the scheduled dates and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible, inclusive, and transparent electoral processes .
