ADC Convention overhauls Party structure, amends Constitution with 94% vote

ABUJA — The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has carried out sweeping internal reforms following a decisive vote at its National Convention in Abuja, where delegates overwhelmingly approved amendments to the party’s constitution.

Announcing the results at the Rainbow Event Centre, former Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Electoral Sub-Committee, Emeka Ihedioha, disclosed that 1,576 delegates were accredited, with 11 votes voided. Of the valid votes cast, 1,471 delegates, representing 94 percent, voted in favour of the constitutional amendment.

“Distinguished delegates, by virtue of this result announced, it means that the constitution of the African Democratic Congress has today been duly amended by this convention,” Ihedioha declared, confirming the formal adoption of the changes.

Earlier in the proceedings, Chairman of the Legal and Convention Processes Committee, Olumide Akpata, led the ratification of key resolutions emanating from the party’s 97th, 98th and 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings.

The National Organising Secretary, Chinedu Idigo, outlined far-reaching decisions approved by delegates. These include a waiver of membership requirements, suspension of zoning provisions for executive offices, and the removal of the rule mandating that vacant positions be filled by individuals from the same geographical zone as their predecessors.

In a dramatic shake-up, the 99th NEC meeting dissolved the Chief Ralp Nwosu-led National Working Committee (NWC) with immediate effect. The new NWC under former Senate President David Mark has now assumed full control of the party’s affairs, a decision unanimously ratified by the convention.

In his closing remarks, Mark hailed the convention as a benchmark in party organisation, noting that despite his experience attending multiple conventions as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), none matched the standard witnessed at the ADC gathering.

Describing the exercise as an “excellent performance,” Mark declared that the convention marks the beginning of the ADC’s strategic march toward the Presidential Villa in 2027.

The convention is widely seen as a bold attempt by the ADC to reposition itself as a formidable force ahead of the next general elections, with the constitutional amendments and leadership restructuring setting the stage for an aggressive political push.
