“Nigeria’s journey to sustainable development begins where leadership embraces accountability and Public Relations becomes the bridge between governance and the trust of the people.”
ASABA – In a powerful address that laid bare Nigeria’s deepening governance crisis, Mr. Godfrey C. Osakwe, FNIPR, Chairman of the Delta State Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, issued a stark warning Thursday: six decades after independence, Africa’s most populous nation stands at a perilous crossroads where the widening chasm between government and the governed threatens the very fabric of national cohesion.
Speaking at the 2026 AGM Public Lecture held at the Old Press Centre, Government House, Asaba, Osakwe declared that Nigeria’s developmental challenges are fundamentally “challenges of trust, credibility, communication, and governance” – not merely economic or political ailments requiring technical fixes.
“The gap between government and the governed has widened dangerously,” Osakwe told an audience of distinguished scholars, policymakers, and media professionals. “A significant trust deficit has emerged, threatening social cohesion and national development.”
The NIPR Chairman painted a sobering picture of a nation richly endowed yet persistently underperforming. “Nigeria is abundantly blessed with human and natural resources and possesses enormous potential to stand among the world’s most prosperous nations,” he noted. “Yet, more than six decades after independence, our nation continues to grapple with challenges that have hindered its progress.”
Osakwe identified weak institutions, policy inconsistencies, corruption, insecurity, unemployment, and inadequate social services as the primary drivers of public disillusionment, factors that have collectively eroded citizens’ confidence in leadership and institutions.
Themed “Leadership, Accountability, and Sustainable Development in Nigeria: The Strategic Intersection of Public Relations for National Repositioning,” the lecture brought together some of Nigeria’s foremost intellectual minds, including Professor Samuel Ovuete Aghalino, Vice Chancellor of Dennis Osadebay University, Asaba, who served as Keynote Speaker, and Professor Dode Robert Oghenedoro, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics) of the same institution, as Guest Speaker.
Osakwe emphasized that the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, established in 1963 and chartered in 1990 under Decree No. 16 (now Cap N114, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004), has a statutory responsibility that extends beyond professional regulation to national transformation.
“The Annual Public Lecture remains one of the Institute’s strategic platforms for intellectual engagement and policy discourse,” he explained. “Over the years, it has provided opportunities for meaningful conversations on governance, leadership, public policy, reputation management, and national development.”
The Chairman articulated a compelling framework for national repositioning: “Leadership provides direction; accountability ensures responsibility; sustainable development guarantees long-term progress; while Public Relations serves as the strategic bridge connecting these critical elements.”
He further argued that these pillars collectively offer “a pathway towards rebuilding public confidence, strengthening democratic institutions, enhancing national reputation, and repositioning Nigeria as a respected and prosperous nation within the global community.”
Expressing gratitude to sponsors and donors whose support made the event possible, Osakwe also acknowledged the contributions of key stakeholders, including Elder Emmanuel Ogidi, FNIPR; Chief Patrick Ukah; Mr. Charles Aniagwu; Mr. Festus Ahon; and the Delta State Government, describing their commitment as exemplifying “the ideals of professionalism, unity, and service.”
Special appreciation was extended to the Planning Committee Chairman, PC Gloria Onyinyechi Udemezue, MNIPR, and all committee members for their dedication and sacrifice.
In his concluding remarks, Osakwe left the audience with a resonant declaration that encapsulated the lecture’s essence: “Nigeria’s journey to sustainable development begins where leadership embraces accountability and Public Relations becomes the bridge between governance and the trust of the people.”
The event, held under the distinguished chairmanship of His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, Governor of Delta State, with the presence of the NIPR President and Chairman of Governing Council, Dr. Ike Neliaku, FNIPR, underscored the Institute’s growing role as a critical voice in Nigeria’s national development discourse.
As the nation grapples with mounting challenges across multiple fronts, the message from Asaba was clear: without intentional leadership accountability and strategic communication, Nigeria’s immense potential will remain tragically unrealized.
