NDC raises alarm over destruction of Ochei’s campaign banner, demands police action

Party condemns repeated vandalism of campaign materials in Delta, urges security agencies to identify and prosecute perpetrators

ASABA, October 26, 2026 — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta North Senatorial District has called on the police and other security agencies to investigate the repeated destruction of its campaign banners across Delta State and prosecute those responsible.

The party’s demand followed the reported destruction of a campaign banner belonging to its Delta North senatorial candidate, Rt. Hon. Chief Victor Ochei, at Umuebu Road Junction, Obiaruku, in Ukwuani Local Government Area.

In a press statement issued on Monday, October 26, the Chairman of NDC Delta North Senatorial District, Hon. Udoka Aaron Ebenuwa, said the latest incident occurred on Sunday night, describing it as part of a disturbing pattern of attacks on the party’s campaign materials.

Ebenuwa recalled that an NDC banner erected at Ogbeogono Market was also destroyed the previous week, adding that reports indicated that campaign banners belonging to other NDC candidates had been vandalised in different parts of the state.

The party urged the Delta State Police Command and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, identify those behind the incidents and bring them to justice in accordance with the law.

It expressed concern that the repeated destruction of campaign materials could undermine political tolerance, freedom of expression and the right of political parties and their candidates to participate peacefully in the democratic process.

“Political competition should be conducted through peaceful engagement and the ballot box, not vandalism or intimidation,” the statement said.

The NDC also called on security agencies to take preventive measures to safeguard campaign materials and ensure that all political parties and their candidates could exercise their rights to campaign freely and peacefully.

While condemning the incidents, the party appealed to its members and supporters not to resort to retaliation or actions capable of escalating political tension.

It urged them to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding, insisting that the destruction of campaign banners would not distract the party from its commitment to democratic participation.

In a pointed political message, the NDC declared that the destruction of its banners would neither weaken the party nor silence its supporters, adding that the action would not erase its message.

“Destroying NDC banners will not change the minds of angry and hungry Nigerians,” the party stated.

The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to what it described as service to the people, justice and the democratic aspirations of Nigerians, arguing that political competition should not degenerate into intimidation and vandalism.

It further stressed that every political party deserved equal protection under the law, regardless of its political standing.

The statement was signed by Ebenuwa, who reiterated the party’s call for security agencies to act to prevent further incidents and protect the rights of political parties across Delta State.

The NDC did not identify any individual or group as being responsible for the reported destruction of the banners.
