NUT raises alarm as abductors release fresh video of kidnapped pupils, teachers in Oyo

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State Wing, has expressed growing concern over the continued captivity of pupils and teachers abducted during an attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

In a statement issued today, Saturday, May 39, 2026, the union said the situation had become more distressing following the release of another video by the abductors, showing the kidnapped victims in traumatic conditions pleading for their freedom.

The union described the development as heartbreaking, barbaric and unacceptable, stressing that no child or teacher deserves to be subjected to such an ordeal.

According to the NUT, the prolonged captivity of the victims is causing immense psychological trauma to their families, the affected school communities and members of the teaching profession.

The union called on the government and security agencies to intensify efforts towards securing the immediate and safe release of the abducted pupils and teachers.

“This is not a moment for hesitation. It is a moment for coordinated, intelligence-driven effort to ensure the immediate and safe release of all abducted pupils and teachers,” the statement said.

While acknowledging ongoing interventions by the government and security operatives, the NUT stressed that time was of the essence, warning that every additional moment spent in captivity deepens the suffering of the victims and heightens concerns about their welfare.

The union urged authorities to strengthen surveillance, enhance community intelligence gathering and deploy all available operational resources, including diplomatic measures, to facilitate the victims’ rescue.

It also appealed to traditional rulers, community leaders and members of the public to provide security agencies with credible information that could assist ongoing rescue operations.

“The safety of our children and teachers must remain a collective priority,” the union stated.

Reaffirming its support for the families of the abductees, the NUT said it would continue to stand in solidarity with them during the difficult period while advocating for safer learning environments across the state.

The statement was jointly signed by the Oyo State NUT Chairman, Comrade Hassan Ajibola Fatai, and the Secretary, Comrade Salami Olukayode.
